After a tragic accident involving his mother, and the disappearance of his father, young Davie flees his hometown of Blackburn, unsure of what the future holds. With little more than the shirt on his back and a fierce determination to find his father, he sets off on a lonely, friendless road. Back home, those Davie has left behind wait anxiously; Kathleen, his childhood friend who has held a secret close to her heart these past few years, and Joseph, his grandfather whose guilt at the events that dreadful night burns right to his soul. Will they ever see Davie again? And if he comes back, what then?

Bad luck and bad judgment cause a teenage boy to face a hostile world far from family and friends. As young Davie suffers year in, year out, the listener, along with the hapless young man, must continually relive the traumatic night of his mother's death. Narrator Christian Rodska relates this dreary story in solemn tones befitting the subject matter and portrays the many English country voices and accents well. Female voices are more of a challenge, but the listener can easily discern who is speaking. Rodska has the ability to hold the listener in this dark world until the final chapter brings respite.
